From "You're with Stupid" by Bruce Adams: "In 1996, Stars of the Lid had opened for Labradford for a show in Austin, Texas. The Virginians stayed at Adam Wiltzie's house, and the two bands became friends. In 1997, Wiltzie asked the trio if Labradford would like to collaborate with Stars of the Lid for a twelve-inch EP series the Austin-based Trance Syndicate label was releasing called The Kahanek Incident. Each group mixed material from the other into a new composition. Bobby Donne created Labradford's track "Texas" using Cantus II: In Memory of Warren Wiltzie from Gravitational Pull vs. the Desire for an Aquatic Life and Music for Twin Peaks Episode #30 Part Il and 24 Inch Cymbal from the vinyl version of The Ballasted Orchestra. In turn, Stars of the Lid utilized "Pico,", "Battered," and "The Cipher" from Labradford and "Disre-membering" from Prazision to create Virginia. This interaction between the two bands continued, with Adam Wiltzie traveling to Europe to mix sound for Labradford in October 1997.

After working on The Kahanek Incident, Donne suggested more musical collaboration with Wiltzie. The two began trading tapes in the mail, and in May 2000 Donne spent a week with Wiltzie recording at his home studio. What resulted was the Aix Em Klemm album kranky released in October"
